I’m late to the party on this book series. But I really enjoyed it. If you know me and my feelings about series, [see my opinions on series here] you’ll be shocked when I say that I will continue reading the next book! It was the perfect light and funny read for busy Thanksgiving time. I’ve been reading a lot of dark books lately, so this was a nice “palate cleanser” before moving on to the next intense story on my list.

With that said, I had an issue with some subplots that were actually really dark but made light by using humor (such as attempted rape, mutilations, murder…) There’s also one particular scene that hasn’t aged well since the mid-nineties. If you’ve read the book, it’s the garage scene with the train. I mean, how can you root for the guy at all after that? But we’re supposed to.
I also had issues with the grammar. There was a lot of passive voice and filtering. Many popular books use both of those things, but I’ve been in book-editing-mode recently and those are two things you cut first. So they stand out to me now.
But, I enjoyed the story and the campiness. My sense of humor has been compared to Evanovich’s, so I obviously connected with it. And any book series that is still going after over twenty books has to be doing something right. I’m actually really surprised that it hasn’t been made into a TV series. (I heard the movie version was a flop. I’ll try to watch it soon for comparison). I am excited to see how the series has evolved over the last twenty years and really get to know the characters.
